The Picture of Dorian Gray


The picture of Dorian Gray is a Wilde Oscar’s classic story ;one of the most important writers of the nineteenth century. It was written in 1892.
The story talks about the value of beauty as well as the consequence of people’s influence on each other.
Lord Henry Wotton and Basil Hallward were best friends. They had studied together at Oxford University. At the beginning of the story, they were both about thirty years old. Basil was a well known artist. Henry; called Harry by his friends, was a very rich man but he had no job.
One day, while Basil was painting a portrait of a very beautiful young man with blond hair, bright blue eyes and a pale face, Harry came into the room and contemplated the picture curiously. He was fascinated by it. Then, he asked Basil to exhibit the picture at an art gallery, for he thought it was the best picture Basil has ever painted. But the later strongly refused. He said the picture shows too much of himself, since he had put all his feelings and emotions in it. And he did not want other people to figure out his soul. Harry was surprised. But he was also confused. He wondered why Basil had said such things. There was no similarity between his friend and the picture. Then, they were sitting in the garden, when Harry asked Basil to meet Dorian Gray. But the artist said “no” to him. He knew that harry was somehow a bad one with strange ideas, and he did not want hi; to influence the young man. But while talking, Dorian came to Basil’s house. Harry had, at last, the opportunity to meet the twenty-year-old man. Harry had also the chance to speak with Dorian face to face.
Before talking to Lord Henry, Dorian was very kind, shy and had no experience in life. But after their meeting, his ideas and thoughts turned upside-down. He has totally changed. Hurry’s influence was quick and deep. He tried to make him abandon his own personality. He told him several times to live his life perfectly while he’s still young and charming. Moreover, he insisted that Dorian must do anything he wants to, without caring about other people.
Dorian and hurry became “good” friends, then.
A little time has passed, when Dorian came to Hurry’s house and told him about a secret of his. He confessed that he fell in love with an actress called Sibyl Vane, and he would marry her soon. He invited his two friends, Hurry and Basil, to the theatre in order to see Sibyl playing Juliet’s role in the play. That night, the little Sibyl was not acting well. The entire crowd started to shout loudly. The play was becoming more and more boring. Basil and Hurry did not want to stay anymore. They left the theatre but Dorian would rather wait for Sibyl. Once the play was over, he harried to see what’s wrong with his lover. Sybil told him then, that she no longer wanted to be an actress.
